COGNITIVE GRAMMAR: PRINCIPLES, INTERPRETATIONS, AND PSYCHOLINGUISTIC FOUNDATIONS

Abstract

Cognitive Grammar (CG), developed by R. Langacker, provides a central framework in cognitive linguistics, integrating linguistic knowledge with general cognitive processes. Unlike formal generative approaches, CG conceptualizes language as part of human cognition, where grammar, lexicon, and meaning are inseparable. This paper presents the key principles of Cognitive Grammar, interprets them in light of contemporary psycholinguistic findings, and evaluates the empirical plausibility of this approach. Emphasis is placed on language units as cognitive routines, usage-based formation of grammatical structures, and the balance between reproductive and operational strategies.
